A beautician is a person who makes someone beautiful. It is something that should come from you heart, a deep desire to help another to fade out their flaws, add zing to their looks and make their confidence boost up. When this desire mingles with a huge passion and talent, one exceptional beautician comes to life. Selina, a colorful lively soul who loves to experiment with colors puts her feelings and the inspirations she gets into life with the art of make up. Let’s sink in to her story.

So, shall we start with a little introduction about you?
Sure, my name is Selina Lundström and I'm 18. I am half Swedish/half Sri Lankan but was born and raised in Sweden. I have been to Sri Lanka several times and have visited so many places there from when I was just few months old. I love Sri Lanka! It has such a beautiful heritage and traditions I love to follow since I'm a Buddhist.

We love to know about your schooling time, have you already interested in this field at that time too?
I started wearing makeup at an early age. I remember one day in 5th grade after physical education when my class and I were getting ready to go home, and I saw one of my class mates applying some kind of makeup and I asked her if I could try it out. So she lent me the makeup and that's how I got to know about it and also that's when my interest for it started. After that I started to explore my mother's makeup. She used to have a variety of lipsticks in different shades of red and I loved trying them out. After a while my mother bought makeup for me as well and I discovered so many makeup products and different brands. I studied science and math during my school years but makeup has always been a huge interest for me.

You seem to be a person with a huge passion for this art of makeup. Can you share your feelings on the job you are in?
I LOVE makeup! It's my passion. For me makeup is art. I'm a colorful person and I love to experiment with different colored eye shadows and finding the right lipstick or blush color to go with it. It just makes me so happy! When I apply makeup I let my creativity flow. Whenever I feel inspired of something, it can be flowers, the sunset, the sky, patterns or anything, sometimes even feelings, I express it with makeup, different colors. It's like drawing a painting. Makeup really allows me to express my feelings and what's on my mind. I always loved to draw as well. Art was one of my favorite subjects back in school.

Do you have your own shop? Can we know more about that?
I don't have my own shop or salon, yet, since I just started 3 months back but that's definitely one of my goals. I do have a Beauty Blog and a YouTube channel where I upload makeup tutorials and show step by step how to create a makeup look. By doing so it makes it easier for people to create the same look. Other than that I just became a representative for one of the biggest cosmetic companies in the world, AVON.

Before you start your make up, are there any special things you consider about your clients?
I don't choose my clients. I would like it if they choose me instead. I love to work with anyone, young and old, of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I love to do all kinds of makeup, from bridal makeup, to makeup for photo shoots, special events or just "everyday" makeup. That's why I want to work with all kinds of clients. It makes me a better and more talented makeup artist and I get to help everyone.

What cosmetics do you recommend?
There are SO MANY brands out there. There are drug store brands which are more affordable. L'Oréal, Cover Girl, Maybelline and Revlon are drug store brands I really recommend. Then there are these high-end brands as well such as M.A.C, Urban Decay, Smashbox, Lancôme and Clinique. I love those brands!

Are you hoping to learn more on this? If so we love to know more on that...
YES! I do. I want to learn everything about makeup! This is not just a hobby; I want to make this my career. I can't picture myself doing anything else.

What are the difficulties and advantages you have in this field?
Getting exposure can be very hard since there is a lot of competition in the makeup industry. Promoting your work on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter will help people noticing you and your work. You can always start off with applying makeup on friends and family, and then expand by offering your services to the neighborhood you are living in. You have to start somewhere and go forward from there. By being a freelance makeup artist I get to travel a lot and also get to work at my own pace. Another advantage is that you get to meet new people which enable you to expand your network.

Let's go for a common question. What kind of a person are you in ordinary life?
I am a fun loving person who tries to enjoy everything in my life. People say I'm very down to earth and outgoing. At my leisure time I enjoy watching movies, updating my blog with new makeup looks, shopping and enjoying time with my friends like any other girl.

Are you happy with whatever you've achieved so far in life?
I am very happy with where I am in life and with what I have achieved so far, especially at such a young age. The decisions I have made so far have been the right ones. I believe hard work is the only way to success, and shortcuts never really work; because if life came in bullet points, it would have been over by now.

What are your future ambitions?
Other than being a makeup artist, my biggest dream is to have my own makeup brand! That would really be a dream coming true! Just thinking of it gives me butterflies. I am so thankful for all the motivation, support and encouraging words my friends have given me! I really want them to know that it means the world to me and that it helps keeping me motivated to achieve my dreams.

Advices to the new comers & to the people who are going to join the industry?
Have confidence! Believe in what you are doing and have fun with it. There is a lot of competition in this industry but remember to be yourself. Don't imitate others because people will easily notice that and get fed up with you.

Setting up goals is a must! And most of all make sure you aim for it and work hard to get there! Anyone can set up goals but trying to pursue them is the hard part which many people miss out on and they never really get to where they want to be.

You can't expect everything to go the way you want it. It's going to be hard, especially at the start, but as long as you love what you are doing, are confident and learn from your failures, you can achieve great things. Be positive! A positive mind attracts positive outcomes.

Have you got any message to give to our viewers?
I want to encourage everyone to do something they really love! Don't let your fears or any haters stop you. Just go for it and take every chance and opportunity that comes your way. Don't waste your talents and don't stop doing what you love in search of acceptance by others. No matter what you do and what decision you make, you can't make everyone happy. There will ALWAYS be people who are not pleased with what you are doing, so be yourself, do what YOU love and you will go far in life!
