Cradle of a novel tradition was marked on the 6th of March 2017 by Colombo’s two finest ladies’ schools Visakha Vidyalaya and Musaeus College as they entered into the March Madness conquering the spotlight with girl power. The first ever “Annual Cricket Encounter” commenced at the Thurstan College Grounds with the gracious patronage of the Principal of Visakha Vidyalaya Madam S. Aviruppola and the Principal of Musaeus College Madam S. Dandeniya. As the sun rose in the bright blues, the Thurstan College Grounds started wildly colouring in blue and gold with die-hard cricket fans of the two schools to support their Alma Mater. The historical cricket encounter was graced with Mrs. Apsari Thilakaratne as the Guest of Honor. Her elegant presences provided the young cricket lads motivation and strength to perform their level best for a grand victory.

With the tossing of a coin, Visakha Vidyalaya’s opening batmen stepped into the perfectly molded pitch to strike the attacks of the Musaeus spinners. From the first strike to the last, the batting was surprising and miraculous. Each over left the audience spellbound and wows were cheering from the Visakians frequently. Batsmen Manisha Gajanayake and Upani Gunathilake scoring 38 and 52 brought up a fresh enthusiastic start and generously retired after a fair number of runs to their mother school. With the retirement, batsman Vinuki Perera dashed onto the field with her brave attitude warning the Musaeites that she’s here to steal the show. Vinuki scored a glorious run of 72 which included one four strike and ten smacking sixes off the stadium. Vinuki along with Kavindya Nethuminathilaka’s 15runs, concluded the inning resulting Visakha Vidyalaya without a single wicket drop, to score a whooping 224 runs for the Musaeites to chase.

Ending a hasty fielding 20 overs, the Musaeus College cricket opening batmen flashed into the pitch to face the ball attacks of Visakha fearlessly. They were to chase 224runs. Though the chase was long; the determination within the brave Musaeites was no secret to the spectators. The first stage showed a quite promising win. Yet as the match moved into its latter, the batmen struggled to strike the thunderbolts of Visakha ballers specially Vinuki Perera who captured four wickets. Batmen Saduni Perera scoring 19, Chamali Athukorala scoring 11 and Kavisha Virawardhana scoring 9 runs, Musaeus College ended its inning at 80runs in 18.4overs for all out.

The match was umpired by well experienced umpires named Chaminda Hathurusingha and Milindu Fernando. Vinuki Perera of Visakha Vidyalaya accomplished to win the awards of Best Batman, Best Baller and Best All-rounder. The ‘Best Wicket Keeper” award was presented to Thiranya Movindi.

The loud roaring crowd was a great motivation for the players. The high standards of discipline maintained within the crowd while enjoying the event to the fullest was indeed a noteworthy sight. The March Madness lived within the spirited girls and the continuous celebrations kept our Xtream Youth lenses busy clicking the joyous venture.

Dawning into a new era, on the eve of Women’s Day; Visakha Vidyalaya was crowned as the Winner of the “1st Annual Cricket Encounter” by a spectacular win of 144runs. Giving the heartiest congratulations to the Winners, XY wishes both schools the best of luck. May this newly inaugurated tradition last for eternity.
