Visakha Vidyalaya embellished the Jeremias Dias Hall with dramatic brilliance as the students embraced the theatre in celebration of the grand centenary by presenting the Visakha Vidyalaya's signature dramatic creation 'Visakha Gee Nataka 2017' which was originally composed by the erudite Sri Lankan scholar, poet and philosopher Sri Chandraratne Manawasinghe and later recomposed and directed by writer and dramatist Mr. K. B. Herath.
Visakha Vidyalaya embellished the Jeremias Dias Hall with dramatic brilliance as the students embraced the theatre in celebration of the grand centenary by presenting the Visakha Vidyalaya's signature dramatic creation 'Visakha Gee Nataka 2017' which was originally composed by the erudite Sri Lankan scholar, poet and philosopher Sri Chandraratne Manawasinghe and later recomposed and directed by writer and dramatist Mr. K. B. Herath.
'Visakha Gee Nataka' which was staged for the first time in March 1959 during the period of Principal Madam Susan George Pulimood was presented only thrice afterwards in 1967 for the golden jubilee, 1992 for the platinum jubilee and in 2007 in celebration of the 90th anniversary of Visakha Vidyalaya. The drama was acted for the Centenary commemoration on the 1st of November 2017 with the distinguish presence of Mrs. Kamala Kapilasena and on the 2nd of November 2017 by having Mrs. Lalitha Herath Gunarathne as the Chief Guest.
The drama which was organized and practiced within only a short period of five months, was performed proficiently with beauty by the young Visakhians who portrayed the renowned first female lay disciple of the Buddha and also the chief female lay benefactor of the Sangha, Lady Visakha's journey of becoming 'MigÄramÄta' by succeeding through the disputations between her religious perspectives and those of her father-in-law Migara who was a devotee of Jainism.
As stated by poet Thornton Wilder, the theatre can be considered as the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a righteous human being. Principal Madam Sadamali Aviruppola and the academic staff of Visakha Vidyalaya highly dedicated in staging 'Visakha Gee Nataka' with a similar motive of enlightening the students about the poise ladylike character and the inquisitive mindset of Lady Visakha in order to mold the young Visakhians to be true Buddhists 'Visakhas' in the future.
