The flags of Gold and Blue were once again high up affirming the glory of Visakha Vidyalaya and the red carpets led to the Jeremias Dias Main Hall to crown the sportswomen of the year 2017 with honor and admiration for their exceptional performance in sports. With the premiership of Principal Madam Sandamali Aviruppola, the Visakha Vidyalaya ‘Colours Night of 2017’ took place on the 6th of July 2018 as a magnificent evening of recognizing the talents and determination manifested by the young Visakhians in uplifting the school to the crest.

As a mean of appreciating the untiring efforts set forth by the Sri Lanka Army for the promotion of sports, Lieutenant General Senanayake who is serving the country as the 22nd Commander of the Army was invited as the Chief Guest of Visakha Vidyalaya Colours Night 2017. The Lieutenant General was welcomed by a prestigious salute presented by the Visakhian girl cadets and was later escorted to the main venue by the company of the Principal and senior teachers.

The Chief Guest gave the awardees an advice and an outstanding appreciation as worthy and long lasting as their achievements, by stating, “Life is a series of wins and losses. Sports teach people the art of becoming a gracious winner and loser, and how to handle either circumstances. People also learn to set goals. Some of you have won. Some came close to winning but came off second best, or third. Some did not win any medals. But don’t forget that each and every one of you is a winner, even those who can only claim that they only took part in a race”. The Lieutenant General also narrated the undying brilliance of the legendary athlete R. J. K. M Karunananda of the Sri Lanka Army who participated in the 10,000 meter race in Tokyo Olympics in 1964, to emphasize the significance of courage and determination in one’s sportsmanship.

The young Visakhians who participated in Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Diving, Karate, Netball, Rowing, Squash, Swimming and many more were awarded for their accomplishments and service to the school. The trophies for the most outstanding individual player of the year 2017 and the most outstanding team player of year 2017 were presented by the Chief Guest. The stage of the Colours Night was not only adorned with countless awardees but also by entertainment performances of dance, karate and gymnastics.
