Impressions 2013' ~ Showcasing Your Sou l~

The Art Club of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia, had its beginnings in 1924, and ever since, has been responsible for the creation of many a skilled artist in this country. Yet, the annual art exhibitions were first held much later, in 1983. For the thirtieth consecutive year we bring you yet another show of Thomian talent, under that oft-used name, “Impressions”. The name is known to many by now, I’m sure. Except this time, the club dares to do differently.

Not that our work was easy, so to speak. It never is, but the so-called ‘Impressions Exco’, the little group that headed this project and tied up whatever loose ends, made it work in more ways that one.

In fact, the whole club needs credit where the job of organizing is concerned.

“Impressions 2013” brings together artists of all ages, from every corner of the school, and invites them to compete against one another, after which their work will be displayed for all to see. Media ranging from simple crayons, to highly advanced digital art software have been made use of during the course of the competition. Currently, the club has over five hundred pieces in its little exhibition gallery, and in fact almost ran out of space! In truth, we had many more, but choosing the best was crucial. Everyone from the youngest, fresh from the nursery, to those students spending just about to leave school forever, contributed at least something. The club has held competitions before, but a competition combined with an exhibition has for a long time, been a rarity. In my memory, only one has been ever done!

This time, instead of the National Art Gallery, the club holds its exhibition in school itself. A new challenge for us, no doubt, but an interesting one at that. Renovation, repainting, tidying up, lighting, no job could be done halfheartedly. No job was done halfheartedly either of course with such a firm board at the helm of the daily comings and goings. Our souvenir itself is a completely new design, with new material, new cover work, new, well, almost everything in fact. We give a vote of thanks to our past presidents and the work they have done- the work that made us what we are now-in a special page. Yes, in fact, the journey down memory lane was not easy for all of us.

Levity aside, however, we have with us, the world- renowned artist Kalasuri Jayasiri Semage as our distinguished chief guest. He is widely known for his exhibitions and paintings, and we are eternally grateful to him for accepting our invitation. We have, as a group, made many memories together, despite the fact that some of us didn’t know one another that well at the start. There was altruism all around, no man being left alone in his task. So in effect, it wasn’t just about hanging a bunch of paintings in what seemed to be a ridiculously small area of classroom.

It was about giving the people a good show, and most importantly, sticking right on to our schedule, and keeping right on track. The Art Club has, in short, had another successful year. Main Sponsors
