After 8 long years, St. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia regain the Micheal Gunaratne Trophy by beating Royal College 29 to 20 at the Havelock Ground. This was also the first schools rugby game to be played under lights and it went on to favor STC as they charged through the Royal defenses from kick off.

Between the 75th and 80th minutes the game was poised evenly and Royal came back with a try and conversion to make the scores 22 - 20 in favor of STC. Royal's hopes of clinching a narrow victory was smashed as STC #11 went on to score an epic try at the far right corner. Devin Jayasinghe, probably the best player for STC had no problems with his kicking and yet again went on to get the winning conversion for STC.
