Annual School Orientation Program and Hiking Competition 2014

The 16th Annual School Orientation Program is scheduled to be held on 14th of June 2014. Schools around the country are invited to participate in the event. Following the great success of last year program, the number of teams is expected to rise further this year. Dhunukewulla Vidyalalaya, a much needy school in the Gampola Zone has been invited as the special school. Students who are children of poor village are to be helped to improve their standards.
The Annual School orientation program is the largest among any other students organized social welfare programs. The event is a hiking competition for school teams around Sri Lanka. At the same time a needy school is invited as a special school and will be entertained and provided with stationeries and other essential needs.
The 16th Annual School Orientation Program is scheduled to be held on 14th of June 2014. Schools around the country are invited to participate in the event. Following the great success of last year program, the number of teams is expected to rise further this year. Dhunukewulla Vidyalalaya, a much needy school in the Gampola Zone has been invited as the special school. Students who are children of poor village are to be helped to improve their standards.
From schools around the island, student teams of not more than ten members would participate in the hiking competition. These children are not less than 15 and not more than 19 year old. Boys and girls teams are competing separately. Teams will be put into six separate tracks in Hanthana range to achieve a defined destination. Their path will consist of many adventurous events and hiking techniques.
These students are evaluated according to their performance in the hike and adventure program. The evaluation criteria consist of their exploration skills, team work & leadership skills, general knowledge, silence and care towards environment. Scores in the adventure programs are also included within the criteria.
The awarding ceremony is organized in the evening of the event day. Best hiking teams are awarded for boys and girls teams separately. Also awards such as most eco-friendly team will be awarded in the function.
Each year a needy school is selected as the special invited school for the annual school orientation program. On the day before the program, UEC bring the students, parents and teachers to the university. On the day of the program, these students are entertained with many events and games. Even after the completion, they enjoy their trip with UEC members by singing and dancing with them. In the night function UEC gifts stationeries and other needy things to the students. In the day after the program the students are taken for a short trip to the sacred Dhaladha Maligawa and the Peradeniya Botanical garden. The trip also includes a full round in Peradeniya university premises. And then they are brought back to their school in the evening. UEC leaves the students with eyes full of tears.
For the school orientation program-2014, we invite K/Dhunukewulla Vidyalaya as our special invited school which lack in facilities comparing to other schools. UEC’s mission of school orientation program, 2014 is to make a significant improvement in the education standards of these children. UEC believes that it could make an inspiration among school children.
UEC expect the number of audience including school children (Aged between 15 and 19), Teachers, Parents, senior members of UEC, junior members of UEC and other visitors is to be around 1200.
