Janashakthi Full Option Appathon Challenge: Turning an Idea into a Winning Product

We all have the capacity to turn our ideas into reality if we really wanted to. With the advent of various technologies and inventions, many other ideas can be turned into profitable ventures. Entrepreneurs and startups are flourishing and thriving all around the world, and Sri Lanka has also recently gathered an increasing enthusiasm about tech startups, especially focusing mobile apps. As a company which has been progressive throughout their career in this country, Janashakthi Full Option Appathon Challenge challenge was born with the aim of encouraging and supporting the young with promising ideas and the talent to make them into reality.

On 3rd September 2016, Janashakthi conducted the first ever workshop with the participation of 100 different teams. They were all facing the one challenge of creating an app of value which is innovative and useful to the general public. The winning team will get 1 Million rupees along with the endorsements and recognition that comes with being the winning app. Throughout the competition, Janashakthi will take the teams through a full learning experience, guiding them through the challenge with the help of many industry experts.

The first guest speaker for the day was Mr. Jiffry Zulfer CEO and Co-founder of PickMe, who opened his speech by emphasizing on having the right kind of energetic attitude and focus in order to be successful as an entrepreneur. It's not about knowing the right people, he said, but mostly about having a good idea and the right team to properly execute it. Tharaka Devinda, from GDG Sri Lanka who followed Jiffry, spoke on the technical aspects of the appathon including the important of using clean code and not sacrificing the functionality of the product just for the sake of being compatible with too many versions of Android.

Sunesh Rodrigo - DGM Group HR, MAS Holdings - took the stage next and he took the teams through an idea stimulation session backed by his own experience as a successful entrepreneur. All the entrepreneurial ideas begin from one point, that is finding a problem and coming up with a creative way to solve that problem. The question or the problem that he took in order to lead the discussion was 'What causes traffic?'. He gathered up a lot of answers to that question from the audience itself, then taking them one by one and trying to come up with a tech solution for them.

Especially during a competition like this, it is easy to get caught up in a cool, new technology, and mobile apps while forgetting about the user. Sunesh focused on how the ideas should be related to what we face every day, and how the solutions the teams come up with should be relevant and ideally be able to fit into a monetizing strategy later on. Sachira Fernando, the founder of Erbenlab took the stage next spoke about the marketing aspect that is just as important as the developing aspect of a mobile app. For a team to be successful, there should be not only developers who are experts on the subject matter and who create the product, but also the marketing minds who think from the customer's perspective and get the app to sell. You become an entrepreneur by combining both these aspects.

Speaking of the appathon in general, it is not only an opportunity for the teams who will be participating, but it will also be a great initiative for the whole tech industry in Sri Lanka. The new talents which will come to the spotlight throughout the competition will get the opportunity to expand their network and get recognized as well. All in all, we are excited about all the teams and cannot wait to see what they have to offer!
