Guy Fawkes Night also known as Guy Fawkes day, Bonfire night and Firework night
is an annual commemoration observed on 5 th November, primarily in Great Britain.
Its’ history begins with the event of 5 th November, 1605, when the Guy Fawkes, a
member of the Gunpowder plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the
plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King
James I had survived their attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London
and months later the introduction of the observance on 5 th November, Act
enforced an annual public day of thanks giving for the plot’s failure.
Guy Fawkes night was celebrated by the planters who arrived to Ceylon from
Great Britain in 1860s in a great scale and this has been continued by the Sri
Lankan Planters in most planting districts. However, at present, the Guy Fawkes
night is being celebrated in Sri Lanka only by the Agras Sporting & Athletic Club.
For the year 2017, the celebrations were held on 4 th November, 2017 at the Agras
Club in a grand scale mainly due to the initiative taken by Mr.P.B.N.Saman Kumara
–President of Agras Club along with Mr.Srinath Randeniya – Secretary and
Mr.C.Gunasekera - Treasurer and Agras Club planters crew with the blessings of
the Lankem Group Chairman Mr.A.Rajaratnam, the Chairman
Mr.S.D.R.Arudpragasam and the Director Mr.A.Ratwatte.
