“Go Green- Change Tomorrow Today” The Green Building Council of Sri Lanka celebrated the World Environment Day from the 5th of June 2018 to 9th of June 2018 by organizing the “Go Green- Change Tomorrow Today” campaign, which aimed to transform the Sri Lankan construction industry to an environmental friendly trade. The event mainly featured three movements namely ‘A Walk with a Talk’, ‘Green Velvet- Island-wide Tree Planting Campaign’ and ‘Green Voice to speak on Green Concepts’.

The Green Building Council of Sri Lanka which was established in 2009, is a member of the ‘World Green Building Council’ and has been for nearly a decade helping people understand their role in the preservation of the natural environment which we are blessed with as Sri Lankans. The campaign intended to raise awareness on the importance of environment protection and enlighten the public on procedures that can be practiced to curtail the prevailing environmental crises such as global warming and climate change. “Go Green- Change Tomorrow Today” campaign promoted ‘sustainability’ as the new praxis for economic development of the country while ensuring a prosperous green Sri Lanka for the future generation.

His Excellency Maithreepala Sirisena the President of Sri Lanka, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe along with the Cabinet Ministers in charge of the ministries dealing with Sustainable Development, Agriculture, Water Supplies, Urban Development, Education, Science & Technology and Housing & Construction were invited to join in the Green Walk and the Tree Planting Campaign.

The Green Building Council of Sri Lanka joined hands with a number of public and corporate sector organizations including banks, insurance companies, construction firms, garment industry companies, hoteliers and many non-profit organizations such as Environmental Organizations, Professional Associations, Lions Club Network, Youth Clubs, School Environmental Societies, University Students, Sports Clubs, Artists Guilds, National Sport Teams and UN Agencies; in making “Go Green- Change Tomorrow Today” campaign a massive success.

The Green Walk took place at the Heart of Colombo and it promoted the Green Concept for four kilometers from Independence Square to the Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo. ‘Green Velvet’, the island-wide Tree Planting Campaign to plant one million trees all over in Sri Lanka was aided by the Department of Forestry and Department of Agriculture regarding the provision of plants. The movement aims to reduce the atmospheric air pollution and ambient temperature, restore the natural habitats, conserve indigenous and threatened species and educate the younger generation on the importance of the plants. The ‘Green Voice 2018’ which commenced during the “Go Green- Change Tomorrow Today” campaign strives to conduct awareness programs through ‘Green Talks’ throughout Sri Lanka to people of all ages. The event attracted thousands of attendees throughout the days, and turned out to be a great success with fruitful outcomes.
