So in the end the England- Sri Lanka test series was concluded leaving a bitter memory to Sri Lankan fans , making England team triumphant as 1-0. Next comes the T-20 series and the ODI series. Today giving a good beginning to the series, the super Master Blaster Sanath Jayasuriya played a satisfactory inning (important: his first match in this tour) in the practice match that holds for the preparation. It is not a secret that the leading and experienced players except Thilakarathne Dilshan, Prasanna Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara (who achieved a century in the last test match) were unsuccesful in carrying out a good inning.

Today (22-06-2011) a practice match was held in Worcester against the county Worcestershire. When the match was stopped due to rain Sri Lanka team had obtained 249/4 for the first inning giving a hope to the Sri Lankan fans a positive approach for upcoming matches. The superb playing of Sanath Jayasuriya who gave a fantastic start for the inning should be noted specially. He scored 78 runs within 60 balls including 3 sixes and 10 fours with a strike rate of 130. He got out as the 3rd wicket when the total was displayed as 131 on the score board.

We hope more from Mahela Jayawardene in the up coming matches though he was not that successful in this match. He scored only 19 runs from 22 balls with 4 fours. Dinesh Chandimal had to go out as soon as he came to the pitch for a LBW in the very first ball he faced.

Thilina Kandambi scored 35 runs in 47 balls with 4 fours.

Angelo Mathews and Jeewan Mendis entered the wicket next and played well giving hopes for a bright talented future in Sri Lankan cricket. Although Angelo’s’ inning was not that speedy, he played in an opportunistic way making it a big and difficult target for England. He scored nicely played 81 runs within 90 balls with 6 fours and 2 superb sixes. His strike rate was 90.

Jeewan Mendis gave a good support to Mathews scoring 99 runs within 71 balls also including 11 fours and 3 sixes with a strike rate of 139.43.By the lunch break Angelo and Jeewan together were able to go for 269 runs among all the disturbances from rain. After the lunch break Anglo was out unfortunately but it is to be noted that Nuwan Kulasekara who joined with Jeewan, played nicely keeping the rhythm of the match. He scored 13 runs from 9 balls with 2 fours.

In the end of the first half of the match Sri Lanka had achieved 351 run for 5 wickets maintaining a run rate of 7.02.

The only bowler from the county Worcestershire who challenged Sri Lanka was Sajeed Ajmal who took 3 wickets for 42 runs within 10 overs.

Challenging the inexperienced bowling lineup of the Sri Lankan squad Worcestershire opener M.M Ali gathered 136 runs in just 90 balls. He was well supported by the following team mate A.N Kerveeze who scored 45 runs in just 31 balls. Victory favored in Worcestershire's way as they scored 233 runs in the 1st 30 overs for 4 wickets. But when J.G Cameron got out as the 5th wicket when the score was 270, Worcestershire's innings started to fall down. At the score was 294 Lasith Malinga took the last two wickets of the Worcestershires innings in the 1st two balls of his 7th over and that brought a 57 run victory to Sri Lankans.

Considering Sri Lankan bowling attack, Lasith Malinga took 3 wickets for 25 runs in 6.2 overs & Ajantha Mendis took 3 wickets for 68 runs in 9 overs while all rounder Sanath Jayasuriya took 2 wickets for 17 runs in 4 overs.
